The Doomed Prince
developed with Theatre Prospero
Theatre for Young Audiences: Grades 2-9
~45 minutes | 3 actors (plus 15-40 student/volunteer actors!)
Discovered on a fragment of ancient Egyptian papyrus is the tale of a young prince doomed to die by snake, dog, or crocodile. Locked away in a tall tower to keep him safe, the Prince longs for adventure, new experiences, and a life fully lived.
Choosing freedom over fear, he sets out into the world with his loyal dog, wins the heart of a brave Princess, and confronts the very creatures foretold in his fate. At last, he comes face to face with a crocodile who offers to spare his life… on one condition.
And then – the ancient story abruptly ends, burned in a fiery explosion and lost to time.
Now, in this interactive TYA adventure, student performers and audience alike must decide: what fate awaits the Doomed Prince?
Is his ending already written… or can it be rewritten?

About The Doomed Prince Performance Workshops
In these performance workshops, students will explore this mythic Egyptian tale from the inside, by acting it out! They will unlock their inner actor and discover the power of collective creation.
Guided by three professional performers, students will develop performance skills and explore verbal and physical story-telling techniques. After a performance workshop, students will perform this tale (with props and costumes!) in front of an audience of fellow students. Together, the audience and performers will invent a brand new, original ending for the Prince’s tale. This performance will empower students, sparking their creative potential and inspiring confidence as performers and tellers of tales!
This workshop is designed to give students permission (and the safe space) to jump in and discover the joy of performing.
